Oxford University Press, 1987), the concept of sustainable development has undergone considerable changes, with scholars adding various social and ecological dimensions. It underscores that genuine sustainable development necessitates the preservation and management of environmental resources, but also requires profound social, cultural, and institutional transformation. This chapter proposes five principles and reconceptualization of ‘sustainable development’ and concludes that the diligent implementation of these principles, underpinned by political commitment, could guide nation-states toward the realization of sustainable development goals, and foster an eco-civilization grounded in social justice and environmental sustainability.
